Children in crisis situations are often left vulnerable to abuse, exploitation, and long-term physical and psychological harm. Take the pledge to help children in crisis!
The plight of children in crisis situations, such as war or natural disasters, is a heart-wrenching and all-too-common occurrence that has devastating consequences for those affected. When children's basic needs for safety, security, and support are not met, they are left vulnerable to abuse, exploitation, and long-term physical and psychological harm.
One of the most devastating effects of crisis situations on children is their loss of access to education1. In times of conflict or disaster, schools are often destroyed or unsafe for children to attend, disrupting their education and hindering their long-term development2. In addition, children who have experienced trauma may struggle to concentrate and learn, further compounding the challenges they face3.
The lack of access to education can have far-reaching consequences for children, not only in terms of their personal development but also in terms of their future prospects and ability to contribute to their communities4. Education is a key factor in breaking the cycle of poverty and promoting social and economic development, and without it, children are at a significant disadvantage5.
Another major concern for children in crisis situations is their vulnerability to abuse and exploitation. Children who have lost their families or homes may be forced to fend for themselves, leaving them at risk of being taken advantage of by unscrupulous individuals6. In conflict settings, children may also be recruited as soldiers, exposing them to further trauma and violence7.
Natural disasters can also have a severe impact on children, particularly in terms of their physical well-being. When basic infrastructure and services are disrupted, children may be left without access to clean water, proper sanitation, and healthcare, putting them at risk of waterborne diseases and other health issues8.
Despite the challenges faced by children in crisis situations, there are ways in which we can help to alleviate their suffering and promote their well-being. Providing children with access to education, particularly in emergency settings, can help to give them a sense of normality and provide them with the skills and knowledge they need to rebuild their lives9. In addition, ensuring that children have access to adequate healthcare, food, and shelter is essential in mitigating the negative impact of crisis situations on their physical and mental health10.
Ultimately, the key to improving the plight of children in crisis situations is to address the root causes of the crises themselves. This may involve efforts to prevent conflicts from arising or to resolve them peacefully, as well as efforts to mitigate the impact of natural disasters through better planning and preparedness. By working to create a more stable and peaceful world, we can help to ensure that children are able to grow and thrive, free from the dangers and hardships that they all too often face.
As a global community, it is our responsibility to ensure that all children, regardless of where they live, have the opportunity to grow up in safety and with their basic needs met. This becomes particularly important in crisis situations, such as war or natural disasters, when children are at an increased risk of abuse, exploitation, and other forms of harm.

The Pledge:
I acknowledge that when children's basic needs for safety, security, and support are not met, they are left vulnerable to abuse, exploitation, and long-term physical and psychological harm.
As a global community, it is our responsibility to ensure that all children, regardless of where they live, have the opportunity to grow up in safety and with their basic needs met.
As such, I pledge to,
- Volunteer my time and skills to help children in crisis situations. There are many organizations that are looking for volunteers to help with everything from distributing aid to providing emotional support to children affected by crisis situations.
- Advocate for the rights of children in crisis situations. This can involve writing letters to my elected representatives, raising awareness about the issues facing children in crisis situations through social media and other platforms, or participating in advocacy campaigns.
- Educate myself about the issues facing children in crisis situations. By understanding the challenges that children in crisis situations face, you can be better equipped to support their needs and advocate for their rights.
- Support children and families in my own community. Children and families in my own community may be facing challenges as well. By supporting local charities and organizations that work to help children and families in need, I can make a difference in your own community.
- Donate to reputable charities and organizations that are working to help children in crisis situations, like Greater Good Charities, which is working to provide urgent relief to the immediate needs of the people and pets of Ukraine. The organization is providing funding and supplies to help distribute nourishing meals at border crossings for refugees fleeing Ukraine and at shelters and camps for those who remain in the country. Greater Good Charities’ funding is also helping to support people and pet evacuations from Chernihiv and northern Kyiv regions, food, and other supplies for residents not evacuating, and additional sheltering for pets outside the region until they can be reunited with their families.
I understand that by taking action, no matter how small, I can play a role in improving the lives of children in crisis situations and helping to create a more just and compassionate world.
